The Statue of Liberty — one of America’s most important symbols — was almost never built:

Initially, France created the statue and shipped it to New York as a gift…

But in 1885, Lady Liberty was sitting broken into 214 crates in a warehouse in New York. They almost had to ship it back to France — because they didn’t have the funds to build the pedestal for it.

But Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian immigrant, was devastated at the thought of that:

He’d come to the U.S. penniless — and remade himself into an accomplished newspaper publisher. He cared deeply about the values of Liberty that gave him so much freedom to find success…

Pulitzer wrote dozens of editorials persuading regular Americans to feel great passion for what the statue meant. He was even the first to write about Lady Liberty as if she were an actual person.

And it worked. Hundreds of thousands of people donated money to see her completed. And the most powerful, moving symbol of American values was finally built. It went on to greet millions of “tired, poor, and huddled masses, yearning to breathe free…”
